Utilising fluorescence flow cytometry - similar to haematology analysers – to categorise particles in urine by their content of certain molecules and cellular structures allows classifying urinary particles not only by their physical but also their chemical properties. This becomes feasible after fluorescent dyes have labelled different cellular constituents like nucleic acids, membranes, or intracellular organelles such as mitochondria, instead of the manual classification of each cell or particle requiring specific knowledge. Consistent algorithms have replaced subjective observer interpretation of morphology, supplying the clinicians with most important information.


• 2 separate channels: 1 for bacteria, 1 for all sediment particles
